Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is one of Thailand’s most visited tourist attractions as it is only a two-hour drive from Bangkok into the heart of rural life.

Damnoen Saduak was originally the name of a canal dug during the reign of King Rama IV to link the Tachin River to the Maklong River to facilitate transport. The fertile soil in this area proved to be a great benefit to the local people now that they had a steady flow of water to irrigate their land.

Most people lived beside the canal and the 200 smaller offshoots, tending their gardens and orchards producing an abundance of coconuts, oranges, grapes, papaya, cabbages, beans and onions, etc.

The only way to market their produce was to use the canals, hence the Floating Market. There are actually three floating markets at Damnoen Saduak, namely Ton Khem, Hia Kui and Khun Phithak.

The best way to see and experience the floating markets is to take a boat ride  which will travel though the smaller canals so that you can see the verdant orchards before coming to the market areas. The waterways have their own unique traffic jams with hundreds of small boats laden with produce weave their way as the vendors, who are mostly women ply their goods.

There are also walkways beside the canals where you can get a good view of the activities and take those memorable photographs.
The floating markets start before 8.00 am. and are finished by noon

How to get there: Coach service from Southern Bus Terminal to Damnoen Saduak Bus Terminal and go to the floating market by "Song Theaw" mini bus(1 km.)
